Federated learning is often presented as a privacy-preserving paradigm because training data never leaves the client devices; however, the model updates exchanged between clients and the server open a channel through which information about individual training samples can leak. This study was conducted in order to quantify that leakage and to identify the conditions under which it intensifies. The design was an experimental, controlled simulation; the population was a ten-class color image benchmark and the sample consisted of fifteen thousand training instances partitioned among twenty clients by a Dirichlet allocation. The instruments were a federated averaging testbed and a feature extraction module that produced twenty-four signals belonging to three families: final-model output, training trajectory, and update geometry. Data were analyzed with a random forest classifier trained on shadow runs and evaluated on a disjoint target run, using rank normalization to make features comparable across runs. The results showed that the proposed profiler substantially outperformed thresholding on the final model output and that its advantage held across the entire range of decision thresholds. Data heterogeneity had a non-monotonic effect, with vulnerability peaking at mild heterogeneity. Contrary to expectation, longer training and more local steps both reduced leakage. It was concluded that, unlike centralized training, overfitting of the global model does not explain leakage in federated learning, and that privacy evaluation based on conventional overfitting metrics may therefore be misleading.
